What to Do If You Break Down on the M1 Near Nottingham

Breaking Down on the M1: A Step-by-Step Safety Guide

The M1 through Nottinghamshire (junctions 24 to 28) is one of the busiest and fastest-moving stretches of motorway in the East Midlands. A breakdown here can be frightening, but staying calm and following the right steps will keep you and your passengers safe while help is on the way.

1. Get out of the live lanes safely

If you can, indicate and move onto the hard shoulder or the nearest emergency refuge area. Try to stop as far to the left as possible, with your wheels turned away from the carriageway.

2. Put your hazard lights on immediately

This warns other drivers that you’re stationary. If it’s dark or visibility is poor, also consider a hi-vis vest if you have one before exiting the vehicle.

3. Exit via the passenger side, if safe to do so

Never exit into live traffic. If you’ve stopped on the hard shoulder, get out on the side away from the carriageway and stand behind the safety barrier if there is one, well away from your vehicle.

4. Call for help

Call BG Breakdown & Recovery on 07455 266154 — we’re ideally positioned to respond to breakdowns on the M1 between junctions 24 and 28 and operate 24 hours a day. If you’re in a live lane and cannot move (a “smart motorway” incident), call 999 first.

5. Stay safe while you wait

Keep well away from the carriageway, do not attempt any repairs yourself, and keep your phone charged if possible. We’ll call you back to confirm your exact location and estimated arrival time.

BG Breakdown & Recovery provides 24/7 motorway recovery across the M1, A52, A46 and A1 around Nottingham. If you’ve broken down, call 07455 266154 or 0115 772 2528 — we’re usually with you within the hour.
