What to Do When Your Car Breaks Down on the M1

Breaking down on the M1 is one of the most stressful

traffic and limited space make motorway breakdowns
genuinely dangerous if you don’t handle them correctly.
Here’s exactly what to do if your car breaks down on
the M1 near Nottingham — step by step.
Step 1 — Get to the left as quickly as safely possible
As soon as you notice a problem — loss of power,
warning lights, unusual sounds — indicate left
immediately and move to the hard shoulder or
emergency refuge area. Do this as early as possible
while you still have momentum. Don’t wait until
the car stops completely.
On smart motorways (which cover sections of the M1
near Nottingham) there may be no hard shoulder. In
this case aim for the nearest orange SOS emergency
refuge area — marked with blue signs.
Step 2 — Switch on your hazard lights immediately
As soon as you feel something is wrong, switch your
hazard lights on. Do this before you’ve even reached

Step 3 — Exit the vehicle from the passenger side
This is critical. Never exit your vehicle on the

side, and move well away from the vehicle.
Step 4 — Get behind the barrier
Move as far away from the carriageway as possible.
If there is a barrier, get behind it. Never stand
between your vehicle and the live lanes of traffic.
Step 5 — Call for recovery immediately

Step 6 — Stay visible but stay safe
Leave your hazard lights on. If you have a warning
triangle, place it at least 45 metres behind the
vehicle — but only if it is completely safe to do
so on the hard shoulder. Never walk along a live
motorway lane.
Wait behind the barrier for recovery to arrive.
Do not attempt any repairs yourself on the
motorway — even changing a tyre on the hard
shoulder is extremely dangerous.
